Since 1 January 2019, Bulgaria’s e-vignette system has been fully digital. That means no windscreen stickers are used. Instead, your licence plate is registered in the national toll database and checked automatically by ANPR cameras along every Bulgarian toll road.

Once you’re registered, your e-vignette is usually active in the bgtoll.bg system within minutes. You’ll also get a confirmation email with a PDF for your records as soon as this registration is confirmed.

Step 01

Choose Your Vignette

Choose the validity type that best suits your trip. You can activate it instantly for same-day travel, or choose a future start date if you’re planning ahead. This part matters more than you might think. When we drove into Bulgaria at Kapitan Andreevo (the Turkish border crossing, and the busiest land border crossing in the world), we noticed something important: there was no vignette kiosk on the Bulgarian side and the ANPR gantries started scanning licence plates immediately after the checkpoint. That’s why we strongly recommend buying your vignette online before you enter Bulgaria.

A single e-vignette covers every vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes—cars, SUVs, vans, motorhomes, minibuses—for the same price. Towing a trailer? No problem. As long as the combined weight of your car and trailer stays under 3.5 tonnes, your standard vignette covers the whole rig. If the combined weight exceeds 3.5 tonnes, you’ll need a separate vignette for the trailer.

Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes (like HGVs or heavy buses) use a different system—a distance-based toll system—and don’t use e-vignettes.

Double-check Your Details

Entering the correct license plate and country is critical. The system cannot be modified once registration is completed.

Step 02

Enter Your Details

To register your e-vignette correctly, we just need two key things: your licence plate number and the country where your vehicle is registered.

Licence Plate Format

We accept all vehicle registration formats, whether EU or non-EU. Just enter your plate exactly as it appears on your vehicle:

  • No dashes, dots, or spaces
  • Don’t mix up the digit 0 (zero) with the letter O
  • Special characters (like Ü, Ö, Ä, Č, Š, Ž) must match exactly

Email Double-Verification

Enter your email address twice to avoid typos. That’s where your e-vignette confirmation and PDF will be sent immediately after purchase.

Check everything carefully

This is important. Your licence plate number must be entered correctly. Bulgaria uses a large network of ANPR cameras (roughly 300 fixed cameras and 105 mobile units, operating close to 24/7) that read your plate automatically. If your plate is entered incorrectly, you could still get fined, even if you paid for a vignette. The compensatory fine is usually BGN 70 (~€35), so double-check your details before you confirm.

Before activation, corrections are possible. You can change the licence plate number and country of registration. However, after activation, changes are no longer possible and you’ll need to buy a new vignette.

Step 03

Review & Pay

Before you pay, you’ll see a full summary of your order. Take a quick moment to check:

  • Vignette type (and validity dates, especially for the ‘Weekend’ option)
  • Start date
  • Licence plate number
  • Country of registration
  • Email address

If everything looks correct, choose your preferred payment method and complete your order.

We support 20+ payment options, including credit and debit cards, PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Revolut, iDEAL, BLIK, Przelewy24, Bancontact, MyBank, Satispay, and more.

After You Pay

Confirmation

As soon as your payment goes through, you’ll see a confirmation screen.

Instant Email

Within minutes, your e-vignette is registered in the official bgtoll.bg NTA database.

PDF on Phone

You’ll also get a confirmation email with a PDF—this is your proof of purchase.

Bulgaria’s ANPR camera network reads your licence plate automatically as you pass under overhead gantries on motorways and main roads. Technically, you don’t need to show anything. But in reality, some drivers report being asked for proof during stops by police officers, so it’s a good idea to keep your registration confirmation handy on your phone.

We’ve also seen enforcement start immediately, including on bridge approaches. For example, when we crossed into Bulgaria over Danube Bridge 2 at Vidin, the ANPR system picked up where the bridge toll ended and cameras were active from the first few metres of Bulgarian asphalt.

How to Check Your Vignette Is Active

A note from experience:

We Drive Bulgarian Roads Ourselves

In April 2026, our team drove across Bulgaria to see how the e-vignette system works in real life.

We entered and exited at Kalotina on the Serbian border, Kulata on the Greek border (Sofia–Thessaloniki corridor), Gyueshevo and Delchevo on the North Macedonian border, Vidin (Danube Bridge 2) and Ruse (Danube Bridge 1) on the Romanian border, and both Kapitan Andreevo and Malko Tarnovo on the Turkish border.

What we saw was consistent:

  • ANPR camera gantries were active almost immediately after crossing.
  • On-site vignette purchase options on the Bulgarian side were inconsistent or non-existent.
  • In some cases, you’d have to drive several kilometres to buy a vignette, by which point your plate has already been scanned.
Our honest advice? Buy your e-vignette online before you travel. It's faster, easier, and eliminates the risk of fines landing in your mailbox when you get home.
